The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Christian Studies degree is particularly designed to prepare you for doctoral level studies or to develop advanced competence in theological studies. It is two years of full-time study, requiring one year of advanced-level course work and one year for the writing of the thesis in one area of Christian studies. The areas of study and thesis writing are:
- Biblical Studies (Old Testament or New Testament)
- Theological Studies
- Ministry Studies
This program has an academic, research-oriented emphasis, building on prior academic preparation in the general areas of theological education.
Entrance Requirements:

Applicants normally will have their undergraduate degree or equivalent in the field of Christian Theology or a directly related discipline, including one year of study of a biblical language. At a minimum, applicants will have the equivalent of one year of study of theological or religious studies (such as New Testament, Old Testament, Christian Theology/Interpretation, Christian History, Christian Ministry) appropriate to their academic interests (to be evaluated).
- Two letters of recommendation, both Academic.
Course Requirements:
In keeping with the program objectives of providing opportunities for advanced study and research in preparation for doctoral studies or other leadership roles in church and society, M.A. candidates will complete at least six half courses at the graduate level. In addition, each student will write a 40,000 word thesis under the supervision of a faculty member, which must be orally defended. The thesis project is intended to be a major piece of writing that will provide an in-depth foundation for further study or enhanced knowledge and proficiency in a defined area.
The Master of Arts (M.A.) may also be done part-time. However, it must be completed within four years.

- Life History & Vocation
- Biblical Theology
- Ministry & Evangelical Thought
Four courses in one of the following area(s):
- Advanced Topics in Biblical Studies
- Advanced Topics in Theological Studies
- Advanced Topics in Ministry Studies
Of the four courses, please note that two may be enhanced or upgraded 3-unit courses and a maximum of one (1) Directed Study and one (1) Letter of Permission Course is permitted.

The application deadline for January admissions is November 15, and for September admissions, the deadline is June 1.
Accreditation:
The M.A. in Christian Studies degree is approved by the Association of Theological Schools and is granted by McMaster Divinity College.
