The
problem with the church today is not that it is over-educated. One of
its major problems is that it has not taken seriously Paul’s
statement to “study to show yourself approved to God, a
worker
who does not need to be afraid, rightly dividing the word of
truth” (2 Timothy 2.15).
The
church of today demands excellence in everything we do. Ministry in the
church is not an excuse for giving of our second best, but demands our
very best in all we do for God and his work in the world.
I love the challenge of developing students who are passionate about
learning New Testament Greek, the language that God used when he wished
to communicate with us directly about his Son, and in which the New
Testament is written.

Present Research Interests
My research interests revolve around the language, writings and texts of the New Testament, and how they are interpreted. This takes me into the language and linguistic issues of the Greek of the New Testament and Hellenistic worlds, especially as this can be examined through the lens of modern discourse analytical and hermeneutical methods. In conjunction, I also have a keen interest in the actual manuscripts that reflect the growth and development of the New Testament and related textual tradition. Finally, a number of the biblical authors continue to fascinate me, and provide focus for some of my research interests, including John, Luke, but especially Paul.
Present Research Projects
I am currently finishing up major writing projects on hermeneutics, the Gospel of John, and literary interpretation of the Bible. I have co-authored an introductory volume on various hermeneutical methods, and am hoping soon to complete writing my own approach to hermeneutics. My book on John’s Gospel and essays on literary interpretation should be ready for the publisher within the year. As I work on these projects I am also writing commentaries on the Book of Romans, the Pastoral Epistles, Luke’s Gospel, 1 and 2 Maccabees, and my big commentary project, the Book of Acts.
I am also always involved in research in Greek language and linguistics. Currently, I am working to complete a series of graded Greek grammars, which will begin this year with an elementary Greek textbook and workbook, and eventually end with a full reference grammar of Hellenistic Greek, and include other instructional and linguistic tools along the way.
Several other topics that I also try to work on when I have time are several projects on Paul, including editing the series Pauline Studies. I have some new ideas regarding Paul and wish to get them into print soon. I am also keenly involved in research regarding papyrology, especially New Testament and other literary texts as they developed.
As a final project, I am putting together ideas for a book on contemporary issues that continue to plague the Evangelical church.
